Classic Swiss watch making offers an elegant combination of form and function in the form of time pieces which encapsulate over five centuries of expertise. Since Jean Calvin’s reform in the Sixteenth Century prohibited the people of Switzerland from producing jewellery, the watchmakers of Switzerland began to develop more and more ways to create new and exciting designs while retaining a respect for the country’s long and industrious history of watchmaking, meaning that watches of Swiss origin are generally designed for those who enjoy a more classic style which incorporates the very latest in design and technology.
Raymond Weil is one of the numerous Geneva based companies which later expanded from its beginnings in 1976 to become one of the country’s leading, and indeed remaining independent, manufacturers (The slogan adopted by the Raymond Weil company is, fittingly, “independence is a state of mind”.) The design of the timepieces themselves places importance on details such as ergonomics and modern features. Raymond Weil continues to produce exquisite time pieces with meticulous attention to detail and design.
Another Swiss brand name of watch with its own tagline, “Innovators by Tradition” was first developed in 1853, and has since merged with the world’s largest producer of watches. Tissot was originally based in the Swiss town of Le Locle, where its headquarters remain today, however the company has now undergone a large degree of expansion, now reaching over one hundred and fifty countries. Typified by high technology design features using new and cutting edge materials, Tissot is a company which is committed to making high functioning watches which retain the elegance embodied in Swiss watch making traditions –hence their logo. The Tissot brand is also closely associated with various celebrity champions, and has since also become linked with sporting events as a sponsor.
Baume and Mercier is another Swiss based company which upholds the long tradition of watch making prestige. Founded in 1830, the company is now represented in seventy five different countries all over the world. Baume and Mercier products are often held in high repute for their attention to detail, precision and attractive appearance. In 1893, the company came first in a competition held at the Kew-Teddington Observatory for the time piece which was the most accurate. More recently, Baume and Mercier also opened production building in 2004 based in Les Brenets in Switzerland.
This long standing commitment to technological innovation and a respect for Switzerland’s history of creating finely constructed timepieces is evident in the work itself. Continuous endeavours to ensure that this remains the case ensures that Swiss time piece making companies stay well ahead of the game in terms of design and function, creating ever more advanced and beautiful time pieces to be treasured as not only watches, but pieces of history.
